Broadly speaking, does it still feel like the models are sort of climbing the same mountain? Are they becoming more similar, picking up each others' features in a race to be identical frontier models now, or are they differentiating more than a year ago?
I like to check in on these trends from time to time but don't really have a sense of this right now except "if another model/platform has it, I'll probably have it pretty soon too"
I mean, if you're consistently operating at the very edge of their capabilities (complex agentic tasks, coding, cutting-edge research), I'm sure you're still noticing improvements with each model, at least as far as benchmarks are indicating.
But for the average person, I think what now matters more than the underlying models are the harnesses, the interfaces, and the supporting feature sets of the tools around these models. That's also the core of my argument in the last "Do you even need Fable 5?" hot take.
I thought that was a good take. I was all for chasing power and intelligence a couple years ago, but power and compute and intelligence are everywhere now.
