AI Language Models Just Got Even Better!

OpenAI has taken the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) to the next level with davinci-003 and ChatGPT. Check them both out for yourself.

Man, it’s getting increasingly harder to keep up with AI developments.

Just a few short weeks after Midjourney dropped the significantly improved Version 4 of their art-generating algorithm, OpenAI is making waves in the large language model (LLM) space!

It’s been less than a month since I talked about GPT-3 and its uncanny ability to mimic human texts.

Now, that’s old news.

We’re on the precipice of what might be a seismic shift in how AI writes copy. GPT-4 should be here imminently and is expected to be a major leap forward compared to the already competent GPT-3.

In the meantime, OpenAI dropped two releases related to GPT-3 that are impressive in their own right.

Let’s have a look…

#1: GPT-3 gets a boost from davinci-003

Announced on November 28, davinci-003 is the newest iteration of OpenAI’s GPT-3 model.

What is davinci-003?

It’s a newer version of the algorithm that delivers several improvements compared to davinci-002, namely (from OpenAI’s announcement email):

In short, davinci-003 can understand our requests better and write copy that’s both longer and of higher quality than before.

Here’s a good comparison video from “All About AI”:

The best part?

You can take davinci-003 for a test drive right now!

How can you try davinci-003?

You’ve got at least two options.

Option 1: OpenAI’s own Playground

Go to https://beta.openai.com/playground

(You’ll have to sign up for an account if you don’t already have one.)

As a new user, you’ll be given a limited amount of tokens to test the model for free. In the settings column to the right, make sure to select “text-davinci-003” as the model:

You’re all set!

Now enter your request within the blank canvas:

Click the green “Submit” button at the bottom:

Then watch the magic happen (yes, it even knows proper script formatting):

Go ahead and experiment with commands and requests, no matter how wacky. Chances are, GPT-3 will positively surprise you with how well it handles it.

Option 2: Lex

Remember the nifty word processor called Lex I discussed three weeks ago?

Its founder, Nathan Baschez, was quick to implement davinci-003 into the product:

So if you can’t be bothered with OpenAI’s own platform or have run out of tokens, Lex is the way to go. My post above explains how to sign up, and I also have a few free invites left to share. Just ask!

Here’s how Lex handled the same request:

The above is just a snippet, but by asking it to continue, you can get GPT-3 to pretty much flesh out the entire story.

#2: OpenAI releases ChatGPT for public testing

As if that wasn’t enough, OpenAI also released a new model called ChatGPT.

What is ChatGPT?

It’s a language model specifically optimized for dialogue and interaction. Here’s a summary straight from the horse’s mouth:

ChatGPT acts as a proper dialogue partner, remembering what’s been said as well as the broader context of the conversation. It is also apparently very good at analyzing, explaining, and fixing code.

This outstanding Twitter thread highlights all the many awesome things ChatGPT can do—I highly recommend it to anyone remotely curious about it:

All the best examples of ChatGPT, from OpenAI:

OpenAI considers ChatGPT to be a sort of GPT-3.5, making it more competent than the pure GPT-3.

That’s because ChatGPT is more focused and restricted in its functionality than GPT-3, which seems to make it more accurate. It tends to steer clear of responding to queries it doesn’t actually know the answer to, unlike GPT-3, which will lie to you without blinking. (Because it’s just a string of code but also a bold-faced liar.)

But both ChatGPT and davinci-003 are much better at rhyming than prior versions. Here are two examples by yours truly:

Damn. #ChatGPT by #OpenAI can rhyme really well! Check out this convincing rap track about the joys of sorting clothes it wrote in just a few seconds. GPT-4 is going to be insane!

Yeah okay. #ChatGPT is also a more effective parent than I am. Thanks, #OpenAI!

Want to give it a spin? You can!

How can you try ChatGPT?

During the testing phase, ChatGPT is open to the public, 100% free. (Though you will need an OpenAI account for this one.)

Just go here: https://chat.openai.com/chat

Then start a chat session by simply typing your question or request:

ChatGPT will jump into action, giving you a robust answer:

Thanks, ChatGPT! That’s 3 out of 3 for me.

So go ahead and take both davinci-003 and ChatGPT for a spin.

Over to you…

Have you tried either davinci-003 or ChatGPT? What are your impressions? Did you come across clever or creative ways people use ChatGPT?

I’m curious to see everyone’s examples, so don’t hesitate to write to me or leave a comment below.
